VOLUNTEER WILDING PINE CONTROL FIELD DAYSTwo highly successful field days were held on the Black Birch Range in early May to introduce new volunteers to the Trust’s work. Sunday’s weather was rather windy so work was carried out destroying wilding pines in a relatively sheltered location on the south east side of the hill. Eight of us controlled a grand total of 1044, all pulled, cut or sawn off with handsaws, including some quite large trees. The second day we successfully removed 2 pockets of Pinus contorta. The majority of the these trees were smaller but were contorted and multi-stemmed, making them much more difficult and slower to cut down. A grand total of 271 trees were controlled.
